With Valentine’s Day upon us, our minds flutter away with Cupid and turn to thoughts of love. Aww. In light of this, here at EG we decided to show you some love in the shape of the amazing ways in which nature depicts that enduring romantic symbol, the heart! Many of you may have seen heart-shaped leaves, but the natural world can also throw up much larger representations – giant hearts, no less! You just have to know where to look…
This first heart-shaped landmass became quite famous when it was brought to public attention courtesy of Google Earth a couple of years back. Known variously as the Island of Love or Lover's Island, its real name is Galesnjak, and it’s located just off the coast of Croatia.
Clouds & Sky
Love is in the air! A heart shape formed by clouds makes up the outline here, with a gap in their midst speaking of a heavenly passion.
And the opposite effect... What could be more special than a heart floating in the sky above you? Lie back, cuddle up to that special person in the sun and watch it drift away!
Time for some night-time romance! This snapshot was taken as clouds moved in front of the moon, with the photographer using long exposure to capture the heart shape overhead.
This perfectly heart-shaped island is to be found in the city of Adana in Turkey. Another aerial photo that’s got us feeling the love!
The Great Barrier Reef is one of the planet’s most majestic natural formations. This heart-shaped coral reef in its midst is just one of the amazing sights to be seen there, but it shows Mother Nature to be a true romantic artist!
It might look like the foam on a cappuccino but it’s actually a sandbank shaped like a heart in New Zealand. Love that may not last for long – but a wonderful shot all the same!
Tavarua is a heart-shaped island in Fiji and an idyllic spot by any estimation. With its tropical location and spectacular form, it all adds up to a place just made for romance.
Lakes
This gleaming blue heart-shaped body of water in the mountains of North Wales is called Glaslyn, which means ‘Blue Lake’ — but looking at it, it could easily have been named the Lake of Love!
Looking at the way in which the ground around this heart-shaped pool has been churned up, we rather suspect it’s man-made. But natural or not, this is an aerial shot that looks full of love to us!
The next heart definitely came to be with some human help. Yep, someone went through a lot of trouble to show their love by constructing this perfect heart-shaped lake near Columbia Hills Corners in Ohio. And thanks to Google Maps, we’re able to marvel at it!
Caves & Rock
Formed in the midst of pinkish rock and split by a fissure, we can’t help but wonder: is this nature's broken heart?
This heart-shaped cave near Prespes in Greece has been carved out by the waves. It sure looks like a special place for romantic love to flourish.
Australia's Uluru, or Ayers Rock, is famous in its own right, but Mother Nature signed her bigger work with this heart-shaped impression, hollowed out in the enormous edifice.
This beautiful blue-colored heart in South India’s Hoganakel water caves can apparently only be seen under certain weather conditions. Well, it’s definitely worth any wait in our book!

So it certainly looks like there's a lot of love to be found out there in nature, with big hearts appearing naturally all over the world! Here's hoping that today, you might stumble across someone who might give your own heart a little flutter...
